Swedish Progressive outfit, KATATONIA, concluded their long awaited Australian headline tour last night in Perth, featuring support from YOMI SHIP. Here is our impression of the night below.
YOMI SHIP, the Perth instrumental prog/art/math rock trio, mesmerised audiences as they opened the night. The live sound was very well mixed, allowing every instrument to be heard while maintaining a cohesive blend. Jade Champion's bass tone cut through sharply, adding depth to their compositions, while each member showcased remarkable skill on their respective instruments. Nick Osborne's powerful drumming drove the rhythm with intensity and Jarred Osborne's precise use of guitar effects added layers of texture and atmosphere to their music. Overall, YOMI SHIP's performance was a great start to the night and warmed the Perth crowd for what was about to come.
KATATONIA’s long-awaited return to Perth after 8 years was nothing short of spectacular. Opening with tracks like 'Austerity' and 'Colossal Shade' from their latest album 'Sky Void of Stars', the band displayed incredible tightness and precision, setting the tone for the rest of the night. The live sound was mixed to perfection, allowing every element to shine through, with Jonas Renkse's vocals particularly standing out as he remained on point throughout the entire performance.
Niklas Sandin's bass tone was a highlight, especially during 'Nephilim', while Daniel Moilanen's tight drumming, notably his precise double kicks in songs like 'Forsaker' and 'July', added a dynamic energy to the set. Roger Öjersson's outstanding lead guitar work, especially on tracks like 'Behind the Blood', was complemented by his soaring backing vocals, creating a captivating sonic landscape, especially when complimented with Renkse. With the audience enthusiastically joining in during 'My Twin', and the emotive closure of 'Evidence', KATATONIA delivered a night that was truly unforgettable, leaving fans eagerly anticipating their next return.
