TESSERACT & FUTURE STATIC - Live @ Magnet House, Perth 09/05/2024
TESSERACT returned to Perth for the first time in 6 years to a packed out Magnet House, supported by Melbourne’s FUTURE STATIC.
FUTURE STATIC took the stage at Magnet House with an electric energy, but unfortunately - not by any fault of the band - the first few songs were marred by a muddy mix that obscured the nuances of their performance. However, as the set progressed, the sound quality improved significantly, allowing Amariah Cook's remarkable vocal range to shine. From angelic cleans to fierce screams, Cook captivated the audience with her versatility.
The band's interaction with the crowd was a highlight, with amusing banter injecting a dose of humour into the evening. Cook's remark about their "proggiest song still in 4/4" and Ryan Qualizza's comment “of all the songs we've ever written, this is one of them” elicited chuckles. Future Static's ability to engage the audience was further evident by their skillful orchestration of a crowd-wide clap along. Their cover of Daddy Yankee's 'Gasolina' added a playful twist to the set, but it was the poignant finale with 'Roach Queen' that truly left an impact, as Cook led the crowd in a haunting chant of "I was sick and nobody helped me.”
TESSERACT were up next and their performance at Magnet House was nothing short of mesmerizing, as they kicked off their set with the first two tracks off their latest album, ‘War of Being’; 'Natural Disaster' followed by 'Echoes', setting the tone for an unforgettable evening. The band's cohesion was flawless, with each member contributing to a sound that mirrored the studio recordings with absolute precision. Acle Kahney and James Monteith's guitar work soared above Jay Postones' impeccable drumming, especially evident during the crushing intro of 'Of Mind - Nocturne'.
Daniel Tompkins injected a playful energy into the crowd, teasingly remarking, "you guys are half asleep," before launching into the electrifying 'Dystopia', which ignited the audience into a frenzy of movement. Cook from FUTURE STATIC joined the band on 'King', with Tompkins emphasising the song's message of unity and encouraging the crowd to shine their lights. 'The Grey' showcased Amos Williams' masterful bass tone, while 'Juno' had the entire venue pulsating with its infectious energy.
As the set drew to a close, TESSERACT treated the audience to an encore, catering to their "old school fans" with 'Concealing Fate, Part 1: Acceptance' and 'Concealing Fate, Part 2: Deception', culminating in the first-ever TESSERACT circle pit during 'Deception', cementing the night as a historic moment for fans and the band alike.
